Desk. There was a huge uproar in the Parliament of New Zealand on Thursday, where a unique protest was seen. Here, the youngest MP of Parliament, Hana-Rawhiti, opposed a bill so much that her video is now going viral. Actually, MP Hana protested against a bill by performing enthusiastic Maori Haka Dance. This bill is related to a treaty between Britain and Maori.
When MPs gathered on 14 November to vote on the Treaty Principles Bill, a 22-year-old Māori MP (Hana-Rawhiti) tore up a copy of the bill while performing the traditional Māori Haka Dance. Other members of the House and spectators sitting in the gallery began dancing the Haka with Hana-Raohiti Kariariki Mappy-Clark, causing Speaker Gerry Brownlee to briefly adjourn the House session.
The Treaty of Waitangi of 1840 guides relations between the government and Māori. In this, tribal groups get broad rights to retain their land and protect their interests in return for handing over power to the British administration. The bill would specify that these rights would apply to all New Zealanders.
Hana-Rawhiti Kariariki Mappy-Clark is New Zealand’s youngest MP. The 22-year-old MP represents Te Pati Māori in Parliament. Hana has become the youngest MP in the two hundred years of New Zealand’s history. Mapey-Clark initially made headlines in New Zealand after she was elected in the 2023 elections and performed the traditional haka dance in Parliament during her maiden speech. Let us tell you here that Haka Dance is a war song, which is performed with full strength and emotion.
