The United States of America is taking new steps to provide military support to Kyiv, strengthening its presence in Ukraine. Newsweek writes about it.
It is noted that in 2014, when Crimea joined Russia, Washington’s reaction was limited to anti-Russian sanctions. There were also some quiet military exercises and deliveries of “defensive” weapons, including the Javelin anti-tank missile system.
However, due to considerations of caution, the United States did not dare to take more significant steps to support the Ukrainian side. After the outbreak of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine in 2022, the United States began to announce more and more aid packages.
Thus, sending the Patriot system became a line that the American side did not want to cross a couple of months ago, but this change is not surprising, the article says. At some point, Washington was also not going to send the HIMARS system.
“The US is taking new steps — steps it promised not to take — towards helping Ukraine. Ukraine receives the Patriot anti-missile system, and Ukrainian soldiers receive a free trip to Oklahoma to learn how to use it,” the author writes in a January 11 article.
He noted that tanks are next in line, which currently cannot be sent to Kyiv due to “technical definitions of what a tank is.”
Earlier, on January 12, National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby noted that Washington is committed to providing the country’s Armed Forces (AFU) with assistance that meets their needs. He also expressed the readiness of the United States to continue working with allies and partners to provide the necessary support.
On January 10, Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov said that the training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the use of Patriot systems is another confirmation of the de facto involvement of the United States in the Ukrainian conflict. Thus, the real goal of the American administration is to inflict maximum damage on Russia at the hands of the Ukrainians, he said.
Antonov mentioned The Washington Post columnists, who openly admitted that the training of the UAF troops in the United States means an increase in American involvement in the confrontation.
Western countries began to arm Ukraine more actively against the backdrop of a special operation carried out by Moscow since February 24 to protect Donbass. Its beginning was preceded by the aggravation of the situation in the region.
