New Delhi. Kerala-based nurse Nimisha Priya, who had gone to work in Yemen in 2012, has been sentenced to death by a Yemeni court in a murder case. Recently, Yemen President Rashad Al-Alimi has signed the final order confirming his sentence. According to the report, Nimisha may be given death penalty within the next one month.
The Indian government has intervened in this matter and assured to provide legal assistance to his family. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday that the government is fully aware of Nimisha’s case and all possible help is being provided to her.
The matter of death penalty is currently before the President of Yemen. However, the President has not yet taken any action on the mercy petition. The Central Government gave this information in the Lok Sabha on Friday. A few days ago this issue was also discussed in the Lok Sabha. Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said, we are aware of the conviction of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that Priya’s family is considering relevant options.
According to the information received, Nimisha Priya, resident of Palakkad district of Kerala, was sentenced to death in 2017 in the case of murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi. According to reports, Nimisha had gone to Yemen as a nurse in 2012. In 2015, Nimisha (Nimisha Priya) and Talal together started a clinic there. Talal tried to embezzle half of the income by fraudulently including his name as a shareholder in the clinic and presented himself as the husband of Nimisha (Nimisha Priya). When Nimisha inquired about this, a dispute started between the two. Talal started beating and sexually assaulting her.
