Owning a home is everyone’s dream in life. Many people want to build different houses. Many people want their home to stand out in appearance and use. Vani Kannan and her husband Balaji from Bangalore built the house with the same idea. They built an eco-friendly house using only soil and recycled wood. They arrived in India in 2018 after 28 years in England. The couple wanted to have a home like everyone else. But their decision was to build an eco-friendly house.
What a start
She came up with the idea in 2009 while waiting for her first child. Vani realized that all the baby napkins and bottles were made of plastic. It was only after realizing how harmful all this was to the environment that Vani came up with an alternative system. Through this, without them knowing it, the first seeds of sustainability began to grow inside them. After giving birth to a baby girl in 2010, the couple decided to return to their home country of India to do more.
Different concept
When they decided to buy their own house in Bangalore in 2020, they were shocked by the high rates of apartments. They came to the path of change after meeting Mahija, a Bangalore – based firm that has been building sustainable homes for more than a decade. With 2400 square feet of space and excellent architecture, their dream home began. Aniruddha Jagannathan, an architect, says that Vani and her husband had the idea of a house that was different from traditional houses.

The bricks of this house are made of seven mixtures of cement, clay, water and limestone. The roofs of the houses are made of mud shops. Therefore, this house does not need AC or fan. The house gets more light and air than needed without lights and fans. They only use the lights after 6:30 pm.
Wood used for home decoration and other purposes is also special. These were brought from a timber collector who visited places where timber was being felled and sold. They also made a bookshelf out of wood left over from the construction. Apart from this, they have also built a vegetable garden near the house. They do not have to worry about electricity bills as they have solar panels.
During the monsoon season, they get their water from a community tube well 200 meters from their house. The couple is setting an example for others by building this eco-friendly home. This couple’s different idea in this age where environmental pollution due to human activity is increasing significantly.
Is commendable.
