New Delhi. Nokia signed a new patent license agreement with Apple, which will replace the existing license that expires at the end of 2023.
Apple sued Nokia in 2009 for attempting to copy the iPhone, after Nokia sued Apple for copyright infringement. The matter was settled in 2011. In 2016, they sued again before reaching a settlement in 2017, where Apple paid Nokia $2 billion.
The new license agreement covers Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies. Nokia will receive payments from Apple over a multi-year period.
“We are pleased to enter into a long-term patent license agreement with Apple on an equitable basis,” said Jenny Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies. This agreement reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investment in research and development, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”
Nokia’s industry-leading patent portfolio is built on over 140 billion Euros invested in R&D since 2000 and is made up of approximately 20,000 patent families, including more than 5,500 patent families that have been declared essential for 5G Has gone.
Nokia contributes to the open standard in exchange for the right to license its inventions on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
In a 2016 lawsuit, Nokia accused Apple of infringing on dozens of patents it owned, as well as patents owned by Nokia subsidiaries.
Apple has had a licensing deal with Nokia since 2011 after settling its last patent dispute.
