North Korea (DPRK) fired an unidentified projectile towards the Sea of Japan, Yonhap News Agency reported citing the South Korean military on Wednesday, May 4.
The height, speed and range of the projectile are being ascertained. This year, this test of weapons by the DPRK became the 14th in a row.
Earlier, on April 29, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced the need to strengthen the country’s military power in order to “preemptively and thoroughly contain” the nuclear threat from enemies. According to him, “enormous offensive power and overwhelming military power” are a “lifeline” and a guarantee of security for North Korea.
Before that, Kim Jong-un promised to destroy any force attacking the DPRK. In addition, during the parade, Kim Jong-un promised to build up and strengthen the country’s nuclear potential “at the fastest pace.” As noted by the Yonhap news agency, Pyongyang, on the instructions of the DPRK leader, will also conduct thorough preparations for the use of a nuclear deterrence program at any time.
On March 25, Washington made a proposal to the UN Security Council to consider increased sanctions pressure on North Korea in connection with the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
On March 10, the United States expressed its readiness to impose new trade sanctions against the DPRK as a reaction to the next missile tests. The White House said North Korea had tested a “comparatively new” missile in the past two months, in a major escalation that violated UN Security Council resolutions.
