Pyongyang: The North Korean government has sent 2 boys from their country to 12 years of hard labor for the crime of enjoying South Korea’s famous K-pop shows, causing international shock.
A video of two 16-year-old boys being punished for watching and enjoying South Korean pop music and movies has caused shockwaves. North Korea has a long history of punishing its own people for any contact with South Korea. Last year 2020 brought a special law for this. It is a law that prohibits the enjoyment of South Korean entertainment. Both the boys have been sentenced according to the Act.
Regarding this, Dr. Choi Kyong Hui, who left North Korea in 2001 and took refuge in Japan and is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Tokyo, said, “The government has given a warning to the entire North Korean people by giving such a severe punishment. This confirms that South Korean culture is infiltrating North Korea. I believe this video was taken in 2022. The Gen X generation has changed the way they think. It is opposed to the North Korean ideology established by Kim Jong Un. This worries Kim. That is why he is enforcing such punishments,” he said.
Punishment carried out in the arena: In the punishment video, 2 juveniles dressed in brown are brought handcuffed to a semi-circular outdoor arena. 1000 children are sitting in the arena. They are all wearing masks. This suggests that the video may have been taken during the Corona period. Then someone announces the punishment. He says that both of them ruined their lives by being influenced by foreign culture.
