The Public Prosecution Service demanded 27 months in prison at the court in Rotterdam on Monday against a 45-year-old man for throwing his one-year-old toddler from the first floor of a flat in Ridderkerk on January 5, 2019.
Mohamed el K. would also have strangled the boy until he stopped moving. According to the public prosecutor, the fact that the boy, as far as is now known, did not sustain any permanent injuries from the fall of at least 4 meters is ‘a matter of luck’.
Residents living near the flat in the Fresiastraat heard hysterical screams from the mother of the child that evening. Several witnesses saw a man and woman standing on the gallery, how the woman hurried downstairs, and that there was something in the grass one floor below. That turned out to be the baby. The boy had celebrated his first birthday a few weeks earlier.
El K. denies that he is the one who harmed the child. According to him, his wife was the aggressor in the relationship and he was the one who was mistreated. “I was afraid of her,” the man told the court. During previous sessions, it emerged that the Public Prosecution Service also suspected him of abusing his then wife. An acquittal has now been requested due to insufficient evidence.
