Free home dialysis now in all districts: Minister Veena George
Health Minister Veena George said that the peritoneal dialysis project has been started in all districts where patients can get free dialysis at home without going to hospitals. In the first phase, the system for this project has been established in a major hospital in the district. Dialysis fluid, catheter and accessories required for peritoneal dialysis are provided free of cost from hospitals to registered patients. At present, this service is provided to about a thousand patients. Due to the exponential increase in the number of kidney patients, the dialysis scheme has been implemented across the state. Apart from this, the health department is expanding the peritoneal dialysis scheme, the minister said.

About half a lakh patients are undergoing dialysis every month including 102 hospitals and 10 medical colleges in the state. Hemodialysis is an expensive procedure that can only be performed in hospitals. On alternate days we have to go to the hospital and wait. Peritoneal Dialysis project was started as a solution to this.
There are two types of dialysis. Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. Hemodialysis is the process of filtering blood through a dialysis machine. Peritoneal dialysis involves making an opening in the patient’s abdomen through which a catheter is inserted and peritoneal dialysis fluid is filled into the abdomen (peritoneum). Once the catheter is inserted, the patient can have dialysis fluid filled into the peritoneum through this catheter at home. After a certain period of time, the wastes of the kidneys are absorbed into this peritoneal fluid and the fluid is flushed out.
