BJP President JP Nadda reached former President Ramnath Kovind’s house in Delhi on Friday.
The central government has formed a committee on September 2 under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind on one country, one election. It will have 8 members including Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and former MP Ghulam Nabi Azad. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will attend the committee meetings as a special member.
The committee will investigate the issue of holding simultaneous elections in the country keeping in mind the existing framework of law. In this, it will be examined whether the elections to Lok Sabha, Vidhansabha, Municipality and Panchayats can be held simultaneously or not.
The government has called a special session of Parliament from September 18 to September 22. There are speculations that the government may bring a bill on one country, one election.
However, on Friday, September 1, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary had asked why the government suddenly needed this. At the same time, Congress leader and Deputy CM of Chhattisgarh TS Singhdev said – Personally I welcome one country one election. This is not a new idea, it is an old idea.
Union Minister Prahlad Joshi said – Now the committee has been formed, why is there so much panic?
After Congress’s protest, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi said, ‘The committee has just been formed, why is there so much panic? The report of the committee will come, then it will be discussed in the public domain. There will be discussion in the Parliament. Just because a committee has been formed, it does not mean that it will be done from tomorrow itself.
Here, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan said, ‘Our party supports One Nation, One Election. It should be implemented.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi had given information about the special session of Parliament by posting on social media platform X (Twitter) on August 31.
Opposition said- Government should have been taken into confidence first
- Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) MP Sanjay Raut said that BJP is scared of India. One Nation, One Election is being brought up to divert attention from the issues.
- SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav said that this government is breaking all the beliefs of the parliamentary system. If the special session was to be called, the government should have at least informally talked to all the opposition parties. Now no one knows what the agenda is and the session is called.
One Nation, One Election was applicable after independence
One Nation, One Election or One Country-One Election means that Lok Sabha and Assembly elections should be held simultaneously in the entire country. After independence, Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held simultaneously in 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1967, but in 1968 and 1969, many Assemblies were dissolved prematurely. After that the Lok Sabha was also dissolved in 1970. Because of this, the tradition of one country, one election was broken.
PM Modi in support of One Nation, One Election
When the Modi government came to power at the Center in May 2014, the debate about one country and one election started soon after. PM Narendra Modi himself has advocated One Nation, One Election many times. On the occasion of Constitution Day, Prime Minister Modi had once said – Today one country, one election is no longer just a matter of debate. This is the need of India. Therefore, this issue should be thoroughly discussed and studied.

There can be a discussion on increasing reservation for women in Parliament in the special session.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister said – there is no specific agenda behind the session
Amidst the discussion of one country one election, a day before, the central government announced to call a special session of the Parliament. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi told through social media post – There will be a special session of both the Houses from 18 to 22 September. This will be the 13th session of the 17th Lok Sabha and the 261st session of the Rajya Sabha. There will be 5 meetings in this.
Joshi also said that there is no agenda behind calling the session. He has shared the photo of the old Parliament House along with the information. It is believed that the session will start from the old Parliament House and end in the new one.
There are three sessions of Parliament in a year. Budget, Monsoon and Winter Session. The monsoon session ran from 20 July to 11 August. The announcement of calling the special session has come 3 weeks after the monsoon session. The special session will be held 37 days after the monsoon session. Whereas the winter session is proposed to start in the last week of November.
5 days session in parliament and 5 possibilities
- Providing one-third additional seats in Parliament for women.
- Shifting to the new Parliament House.
- Uniform Civil Code Bill may be introduced.
- A bill to hold Lok Sabha-Assembly elections together may come.
- Provision possible on reservation. (The Rohini Commission, formed in 2017 to study the unequal distribution of reservation, a sub-categorization of the central list of OBCs, has submitted a report to the President on August 1.)
Women’s seat… can bring the old formula in a new form
Instead of giving 33% reservation to women, the government can increase 180 seats in the Lok Sabha for them. Such arrangement was for SC-ST seats in 1952 and 1957 elections. At that time, more than one candidate was elected on 89 and 90 seats. Later, due to delimitation, the system ended.
At present, arrangements can be made to elect one general and one woman candidate in the seats where voters have crossed 20 lakhs. There are 180 such seats in the country, where voters are more than 18 lakh. All parties have been demanding reservation for women. If the government takes this step, it will be a big step for the government by 2024.
