The JN.1 variant of Corona is spreading rapidly in India. Till December 21, 22 cases have been registered. According to the Health Ministry, there are 2 thousand 606 active cases in Kerala alone. This is the highest in the country. Here on December 21, 265 new cases of corona were reported and one patient also died. One month old baby found corona positive in Jaipur. There are 105 Covid cases in Karnataka, 53 in Maharashtra and 32 in Gujarat. A positive patient has been found in Noida, UP after several months. The doctor told that the 54 year old patient had recently gone to Nepal. He works in Gurugram, Haryana.

JN.1 variant spread in 41 countries
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the new JN.1 variant of Corona has so far spread to 41 countries. Cases of JN.1 are highest in France, America, Britain, Singapore, Canada and Sweden. Till December 22, 23 cases of the new variant have been found in India. According to official sources, all the cases are of mild symptoms.
WHO has included JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest’. WHO said that the analysis so far says that the existing vaccine is completely effective on the JN.1 variant. There is not much danger to people from this.
However, WHO has issued an advisory as a precaution. In this, people have been advised to wear masks in crowded, closed or areas with polluted air. Besides, it has also been asked to maintain necessary distance.
Centre’s instructions – test all districts
The central government issued an advisory to all states on December 18 regarding the new variant. In this, all the states have been asked to conduct maximum Covid tests. The Center has directed to send the positive sample to the lab for genome sequencing.
Due to increasing cases of Covid-19 in Kerala, an advisory has been issued there also. Here, all the elderly aged 60 years and above, people suffering from diseases like kidney, heart, liver, pregnant women, lactating mothers have been advised to compulsorily wear masks when going out.
As per the instructions of the Centre, there is no need to panic too much now or immediately increase surveillance on the border (Kerala, Tamil Nadu states) by imposing restrictions. However, all border districts adjoining Kerala and Tamil Nadu should remain vigilant. People have been instructed to be especially careful during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Where did JN.1 variant come from in India?
According to Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the first JN.1 variant was detected in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on December 8. The report of a 79 year old woman came positive. The woman had mild symptoms of influenza-like disease. However, she later recovered.
Covid sub-variant JN.1 was first identified in the European country Luxembourg. From here it started spreading to many countries. This sub-variant is linked to the Pirolo variant (BA.2.86). It is being said to be dangerous against the immunity of the human body. This is the reason why an alert has been issued regarding the new sub-variant.
The first JN.1 patient was found in America on December 8.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had said that as of December 8, the sub-variant JN.1 was responsible for an estimated 15% to 29% of Covid cases in the US. JN.1 patient appeared for the first time in September.
