Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences Gennady Onishchenko on Wednesday, January 12, explained the low incidence of COVID-19 in Russia compared to Europe and the United States by the ease of transferring the disease, as well as the later end of the holidays in the Russian Federation.
“The incidence, of course, is lower than in Europe and the United States, but not the same as in the statistics, because, naturally, the peculiarity of this disease is different from what it was,” – quotes a specialist “RIA Novosti”.
As the deputy president of RAO explained, the Omicron strain, in comparison with the previous variants of the coronavirus, causes a more benign course of the disease, although it is itself more contagious.
Onishchenko noted that in the USA, where there is currently a very high incidence, the new strain came earlier, and the holidays ended on January 2, that is, Americans were the first to go to work and began to get infected.
“We have a head start, we just went to work, a timely order was given – to develop measures. If we now make it so that our collective immunity is not 63%, but we bring it to at least 70%, by convincing the nation to vaccinate and revaccinate, then this will reduce [заболеваемость]”, – the academician pointed out.
Earlier that day, the head of the Federal Biomedical Agency (FMBA) Veronika Skvortsova said that the proportion of patients with the Omicron coronavirus strain among those investigated by the agency is 76% of the total number of COVID-19 cases.
At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that 698 cases of the Omicron strain had been detected in Russia, most of them were recorded in the Moscow region.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that during the holidays, Russians more often traveled abroad. Citizens of the Russian Federation also visited regions with a difficult Pandemic situation, which is why the country’s authorities must be prepared for an increase in the number of cases. In the United States and European countries, a large number of cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded, the virus does not leave the world alone, the head of state said.
A large-scale vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Citizens can get vaccinated for free. Six drugs against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, KoviVac, EpiVacCorona-N and the Sputnik M adolescent vaccine.
