New Delhi: Both the Houses were adjourned till 2 pm as the opposition parties went on a rampage in Parliament raising issues including the Adani company issue and Chinese encroachment on the border.
As the budget session began in Parliament, Speaker Om Birla welcomed the parliamentary delegation from Zambia and opened the question hour. Following this, the opposition members came to the front of the Parliament and raised slogans. Objecting to the uproar in the House, the Speaker asked the opposition members to remain calm. However, as opposition members continued to raise slogans, the Speaker announced that the proceedings would be adjourned till 2 pm.
The budget session of the Parliament started on January 31 with the speech of the Democratic leader Draupathi Murmu. The President addressed the joint session of both Houses for the first time that day. Subsequently, the Finance Minister tabled an economic report in Parliament. The Finance Minister presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2023-24 on February 1.
Today, the two Houses of Parliament were scheduled to hold separate debates on the President’s speech of thanks. When the meeting started, the opposition parties tried to raise issues such as the Adani company issue, China’s excessive intrusion in the border area, and the activities of the governors in the states. Opposition parties had also criticized the Union Budget presented on Wednesday, alleging that it did little to address inflation, unemployment and widening economic imbalances.
Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Binay Viswam, through a notice to Speaker Jagandeep Dhankar, requested the states to hold a discussion on the declines in Adani Group shares under Parliamentary Rule 267. In his notice, he said that it is very urgent and the current crisis in Adani Group will destroy the money of the people of the country.
The first part of the budget session ends on February 14. The second part will start on March 12 and end on April 6. The government plans to pass about 36 bills.
