Mumbai Opposition parties in Maharashtra (MVA) had called for a statewide bandh yesterday i.e. on 24th August in protest against the Badlapur incident, but the Bombay High Court has declared this bandh unconstitutional. After this order of the High Court, the opposition parties had withdrawn the ‘Maharashtra Bandh’.
On the other hand, today the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) led an hour-long silent protest in front of the statue of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar at Pune Railway Station. Party chief Sharad Pawar and Baramati MP Supriya Sule led this silent protest. Both the leaders tied black bands on their mouths and protested against the government’s indifference towards women’s safety in Maharashtra (Badlapur).
Let us tell you that after the High Court order, Sharad Pawar appealed to the MVA leaders to respect the court order and cancel the bandh. Pawar also said that due to less time to reach the Supreme Court, it would be appropriate to cancel the bandh. Meanwhile, Pune Congress city unit president Arvind Shinde issued a press statement announcing the cancellation of the bandh.
Actually, in Badlapur, a school sweeper had raped two girls. When the police and the school did not take any action against the accused, anger spread in the city. Citizens took to the streets and protested strongly, demanding death penalty for the accused.
