New Delhi: In December 2021, a bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha to raise the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21.
The opposition strongly opposed this. Subsequently, a recommendation was made to the Parliamentary Standing Committee to look into this bill.
The Standing Committee on Education, Women’s Welfare, Youth Welfare and Sports is chaired by Rajya Sabha member from BJP Vivek Thakur.
The committee is in consultation with the Union Ministries of Women and Child Development, Minority Welfare, Tribal Welfare and Labor Welfare. The Standing Committee is also examining the recommendations sent by charitable organizations and sector-based organizations in this regard.
In this case, it has been reported that the Standing Committee has planned to examine in detail various aspects including personal laws and tribal traditions in this matter.
The deadline for filing the affidavit in the matter was extended several times. It is to be noted that the last deadline was extended till April 24 from last 24th.
