Peru’s Congress has approved a decision to declare Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador “persona non grata” in the country, which he claims is interfering in the country’s internal affairs, reports Anadolia.
The decision was accepted with 65 votes in favor, 40 against and two abstentions.
The reason for the decision is “continuous interference in the internal affairs of the country, violation of sovereignty and disrespect for the Peruvian constitution”.
It was announced that during the voting there was a sharp discussion among the representatives and that the resolution was voted after long negotiations.
On February 18, Congress declared Colombian President Gustavo Petro “persona non grata”.
Mexican President Lopez Obrador, expressing his satisfaction with the decision at a daily press conference held at the National Palace, said:
“I thank you for declaring me ‘persona non grata’ because I would feel bad if those representatives and the lady in power (Dina Boluarte) gave me an award or applauded me.”
Earlier this month, he criticized the Peruvian president in the National Palace, saying that former president Pedro Castillo was unjustly imprisoned and that Boluarte had usurped Castillo’s place.
Lopez Obrador declared that Castillo had won a free and democratic election.
Former President Castillo was impeached on December 7, 2022 on charges of “persistent moral incompetence” by Congress, which he accused of overthrowing the government.
Pedro Castillo was detained following his decision to dissolve Congress and form a national emergency government.
Later, Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn in as the country’s new president.
Mexico does not recognize the current Peruvian government as legitimate, saying Congress illegally and undemocratically removed Castillo.
