R Raja approached the court against the decision taken by the Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry. It is a medical college under the direct administration of the Union Ministry of Health.
The verdict was delivered by a bench comprising Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Bharat Chakraborty.
A petition filed by the students against the announcement of a holiday by the Maharashtra government was also rejected. The court also said that there was political interest behind the petition. Four law students approached the court. The court also said that students should spend their time creatively.
The petitioners have alleged that the Maharashtra government has declared a holiday on Ayodhya’s holy day ahead of the parliamentary elections. The petitioners said that this is abuse of power for political purposes. But the court clarified that the policy matters of the government do not come under the purview of the judiciary. The court also criticized the fact that the media came to know about the plea before it reached the court.
