A man was robbed of an envelope of money in a store at around 4:10 p.m. on Friday when he had an epileptic fit at the checkout during checkout. The police speak of ‘a cowardly theft’.
The incident took place at a supermarket on Rijksstraatweg/Marsmanplein in Haarlem-Noord. The victim, who is with another person, gets the attack during checkout. While his companion renders assistance, the envelope of money is briefly left unattended on the counter.
Camera images from the supermarket then clearly show that the money is taken away by an unknown person during the assistance, according to the police.
“The cowardly theft had such an impact on the victim that the man had another epileptic attack at home,” says a press release. “The two are deeply affected by the theft. Especially the fact that someone can do this while responding to a medical emergency.”
The police are calling on the perpetrator to report and return the money. An investigation has been launched and the CCTV footage has been secured. According to the police, it cannot be ruled out that images will be shown at a later stage for recognition, if the perpetrator does not go to the police station in Haarlem.
Witnesses or people with information can call 0900-8844.
