The Gundlakamma reservoir in Maddipadu mandal, which supplies drinking and agricultural water to the upper part of Prakasam district, has been emptied. The water reservoir which was full till now.. is now suddenly empty. The reason for this is that the gate in the reservoir is under repair. As a result, 25,000 cusecs of water went into the sea. Along with kharif cultivation, all the water required for drinking water for 82 villages has been wasted and the farmers are saying that they will not work.
- Gundlakamma reservoir is the third gate to be repaired
- More than two TMC of water flooded the sea
- The minister promised to release Nagarjuna Sagar if necessary
Due to heavy rains, Srisailam and Sagar reservoirs became full and water was released from there, and on 31st of last month, three TMC of water reached Gundlakamma reservoir. However, recently the third gate of the reservoir has been damaged and the water is leaking little by little. For gate repair, 13, 14, 15 gates were lifted and water was released below. However, as repairs could not be done, gates 11 and 12 were lifted on Saturday and water was released downstream.. In three TMCs, only 0.516 TMCs of water is left.
Water Resources Minister Ambati Rambabu yesterday directly inspected the Gundlakamma reservoir and ordered to speed up the work. However, despite efforts yesterday, the repair was not possible and the officials said that they will start the work today. Responding to this, the Minister expressed regret that two TMCs of water had to be wasted downstream for the repair of the gate. He said that the works of all ten gates will be completed soon. He promised to release water from Nagarjuna Sagar without any trouble to the farmers.
