London. A research has found that treatment of blood clots in patients with long covid syndrome can help address their symptoms, such as low physical fitness and fatigue. Dangerous clots have been observed in patients with severe acute COVID-19, little is known about long COVID syndrome, where symptoms persist for weeks to months after the initial infection has resolved. This could affect millions of people around the world.
Researchers from the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Ireland examined 50 patients with symptoms of long covid syndrome to better understand why blood clots.
They found that patients with long covid syndrome had significantly increased levels of clotting in their blood compared to healthy controls. These clotting markers were higher in patients who required hospitalization with their initial COVID-19 infection, but they also found that those who were able to manage their disease at home also had consistently higher clotting were go.
In the study, published in the Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, the team observed that high clotting was directly related to other symptoms of long-term covid syndrome, such as low physical fitness and fatigue. Even though traces of inflammation had all returned to normal levels, the increased clotting capacity was still present in the long covid patients.
Lead author Dr Helen Fogarty, a doctoral student at the Irish Center for Vascular Biology in the RCSI School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, said that since clotting markers became elevated while inflammatory markers returned to normal, our results suggest that the clotting system Long may be involved in the root cause of covid syndrome.
The Daily Mail reported that in a separate study, a team from the University of Cambridge in the UK found that small protein molecules called cytokines are associated with longer COVID status.
Cytokines, which are produced by the body in response to infection, are often found in a person’s body for months after infection.
They developed a simple new blood test that can determine whether Covid-19 survivors will experience long-term symptoms. (IANS)
