In a video posted on the Reddit opinion forum portal, an employee of a Publix branch showed how they throw away a considerable amount of food in good condition.
The video lasts 20 seconds.
In the video, an employee can be seen removing various products from a cart and dumping them all into a garbage chute. Among the products you can see breads, sandwiches, salads and fried food. They were all inside sealed packages.
In the end, the clerk ended up throwing out around 90 items..
Some people noted in the comments section that Publix had made a statement in 2020 that they were not going to tolerate waste at their locations.
In recent years, this practice by companies of discarding food in good condition instead of allocating it to those most in need has been criticized.
Other people said that food was being thrown away by employees who are barely making ends meet.
“When I worked there forever ago, I was in a lot of financial difficulties. I would have loved to take some of that home with me,” said one user who allegedly worked at Publix.
Supermarkets must throw products away because the product has reached its expiration date, because they have to clear the shelves to bring in new products, or because the products do not meet presentation standards.
