Qatari club Al Rayyan ended Zamalek fans’ dream of a former player returning after the Qatari football league runner-up, Al Rayyan, renewed its contract with Moroccan striker Ashraf Bencharki and signed Palestinian defender Mohamed Saleh.
The club said in a statement that Ben Sharqi and Saleh signed their contracts to join the team in coordination between the club’s management and the technical staff led by the Swede, Boya Espagi.
Ben Sharqi (29 years old), who signed a one-season contract, played for Al Rayyan last season after coming from Al Jazira of the UAE, and scored 10 goals in the league without the club showing any desire to renew the contract at the end of the season, according to the vision of the former Portuguese coach, Leonardo Jardim.
Ben Sharqi began his career with Maghreb de Fes, then moved to Wydad in 2016 before playing for Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia. He was then loaned to Lens of France in 2018, then to Zamalek of Egypt in 2019 before moving to Al-Jazira.
The club did not disclose the duration of the contract with Saleh (31 years old), who had previously played with several Egyptian clubs, such as Al-Ittihad Alexandria and Eastern Company, before playing late last season for Muaither, who was relegated to the second division.
Al Rayyan will compete in the AFC Champions League for the elite and will start its journey at home against Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia on September 17, before heading to Riyadh to meet Al Nassr on the 30th of the same month.
Al Rayyan recorded a stumbling start to the new version of the local league, settling for one victory against two losses, to occupy eighth place.
