New Delhi: In a surprise to the opposition camp, Trinamool Congress leaders for the first time attended the Congress-led opposition meeting at the Parliament complex on Monday and also participated in the black-wear protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification.
Parliament met on Monday at 11 a.m. after the Saturday and Sunday vacation. At that time, the Congress had called for a black dress protest against Rahul’s disqualification. Earlier, a consultative meeting of opposition members was held under the chairmanship of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge to discuss how to act in Parliament regarding the Adani and Rahul issue. Prasan Banerjee and Jawahar Sircar from Trinamool Congress attended this meeting for the first time.
Regarding this, the Trinamool Congress has said, “Since all the opposition parties should be united on the issue of Rahul Gandhi, this support is being given only for that.” “From day one we have stayed away from all protests. We have not participated in any. This is an expression of our resolve that we must all work together when there is an anti-democratic attack against all,” said Trinamool MP Jawahar Sirkar.
Congress Party President Mallikarjuna Kharge said, “I am thankful to all those who are supporting us in this matter. I thanked them yesterday and I am also thanking them today. We welcome all those who are joining us in the struggle to save democracy, the constitution and the people. I also express our gratitude to the people who are supporting us.”
Members of the Bharat Rashtriya Samithi Party of Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao and members of the Shiv Sena Party (Uddhav Thackeray’s team) participated in the Congress black shirt protest in Telangana. Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray, who has opposed Rahul Gandhi’s ‘I am not Savarkar’ comment, said on Sunday that “criticism of Vinayak Savarkar will cause a rift between the opposition parties”.
Commenting on Rahul’s disqualification, Mamata said, “In Modi’s modern India, all opposition members have become BJP’s targets. When BJP leaders with criminal backgrounds are ministers, opposition leaders are disqualified for their speeches. Today, we have become witnesses to the decline of our constitutional democracy.”
Earlier this month, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee had accused the Congress Left of having a tacit alliance with the BJP. Also, it may be recalled that the BJP had said that it would stay away from the Congress in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
A Surat court on Thursday sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison in a defamation case related to his speech about Modi during the 2019 election campaign. Following this, he was disqualified from the post of Member of Parliament under the Representation of the People Act 1951 on Friday. It is noteworthy that the Congress party is conducting various protests across the country against this.
