Newly introduced electric AC buses by APSRTC are getting great response from devotees. On the one hand, these buses are leading the way in providing passengers with pollution-free, noise-free and comfortable travel. It is in this context that RTC officials have focused on these electric buses.
The first batch of ten buses are currently plying on the Tirumala-Tirupati route, and the number is increasing day by day. The number of these has reached 62 at Alipiri Depot while a total of 100 were to arrive. Twenty buses have been allotted on the way to Tirupati and Tirumala and made available to the devotees. Officials say that as soon as the registration process for the remaining buses is completed, 12 buses will run between Tirupati – Nellore, 12 buses between Tirupati – Kadapa, 12 buses between Tirupati – Madanapalli and 14 buses between Renigunta Airport – Tirumala.
The electric buses introduced as the first phase have already traveled about 20 thousand kilometers. Generally, a diesel bus fetches 71 rupees per kilometer on the Tirumala route, while electric buses fetch 104 rupees. These buses, made with modern technology, can travel 180 kilometers in three hours on a full charge. One unit is likely to cost only one kilometer of travel. With this, APSRTC is preparing plans to gradually introduce electric buses in place of diesel buses. Steps are being taken to run 50 percent electric buses in the state by 2030.
