A survey by travel-booking site Cheaphotels.org compared hotel rates this May in popular destinations across the country, finding that the historic port city of Charleston, South Carolina, is the most expensive accommodation destination in the US this spring.
Only properties rated 3 stars or higher and located near a beach or the center of a city or town were included for the analysis.
According to Cheaphotels.org, in Charleston guests will have to pay an average of $358 per night for the cheapest double room.
Meanwhile, two Hawaiian resort towns, Lahaina and Wailea emerged as the second and third most expensive destinationswith average fees of $338 and $312, respectively.
At $294 per night, Anna Maria Island proved to be the most expensive destination in Florida, while Napa and neighboring Calistoga turned out to be the most expensive destinations in California, with average rates of $290 and $284, respectively.
“When compared to spring 2022 rates, prices appear to be down this year. In Charleston, for example, guests last spring had to find $374 for the cheapest room, $16 more than this year. In addition, in some destinations, rates have plummeted further,” says the Cheaphotels.org report. “In fact, overall average hotel rates in the 20 most expensive spring destinations have fallen 11% this year.”
The information suggests that demand for hotel stays is also down compared to spring 2022when accommodation rates generally increased, following drastically reduced economic activity in 2020 and 202021,21 as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.

- Wailea, Hawaii: $301
- Anna Maria Island, Florida: $294
- Napa, Calif.: $290
- Calistoga, Calif.: $284
- Boston, Massachusetts: $282

- Poipu, Hawaii: $275
The prices displayed next to each destination reflect the average rate for the most affordable available double room for the period from May 1 to May 31, 2023.
