Under the TDP government, Reliance has stepped in to set up a set-top box and dongles manufacturing unit for internet use in Tirupati with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore. For this, the then government allotted 136 acres to Reliance. The YCP handed over 75 acres of it when it came to power. However, 15 farmers have filed cases in the court regarding various reasons for the land allotted to Reliance.
Approximately 50 acres of those lands are currently in dispute. APIIC officials have proposed to allocate non-disputed lands near the Padamaredu forest in the Vadamalpet zone as an alternative as it is not possible to set up a unit until the cases are resolved. The company did not respond to requests for comment. Recently, the government allotted the land for housing for the employees of the Tirumala temple.
In the wake of this, Reliance withdrew its proposal to set up a set-top box assembly unit.
