At the moment, there is no reliable information about the causes of unidentified fever in Tanzania, but its symptoms may indicate a number of infectious diseases. This was announced on March 17 by the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.
It is noted that the sick complain of fever, vomiting and bleeding. At the same time, specialists record signs of liver failure in them.
“The described symptoms may indicate a number of infectious diseases: dengue fever and chikungunya fever, leptospirosis, the disease caused by the Ebola virus, which was observed in neighboring Uganda in 2022,” the press service of Rospotrebnadzor said.
The department added that samples of biological material were taken from patients for further research.
It is also noted that selective studies have shown the prevalence of viruses that cause dengue and chikungunya fevers in the north of Tanzania, and in 2022 an outbreak of leptospirosis was recorded in the country.
Rospotrebnadzor emphasized that in Russia there were no cases with similar symptoms. In addition, arrivals are monitored at all checkpoints across the state border, so there is no danger of the spread of the disease.
The death of five people due to an unknown infectious disease in Tanzania was reported by the African publication Mwananchi earlier in the day. Two more patients were reported to be in the hospital.
In turn, Mikhail Bolkov, a researcher at the Institute of Immunology and Physiology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expressed the opinion that the symptoms found in people in northwestern Tanzania are similar to parasitic diseases or hemorrhagic fever.
