In Russia, they may tighten control over the disposal of ash and prohibit citizens from throwing it away with the rest of the garbage. The Russian Environmental Operator (REO) applied to the Ministry of Construction with the initiative. Izvestia got acquainted with the letter.
Improper handling of this type of waste is a serious problem, the paper says. Due to the smallest particles that are able to heat already cooled coals to smoldering, ash can remain fire hazardous for more than a day. Increasingly, this problem is causing fires in garbage containers and garbage trucks, mainly in the private residential sector, the operator’s letter states.
Thus, according to the REO, in February and March 2023, an increase in the number of reports of ignitions of garbage trucks, cars, residential buildings and other buildings caused by the unscrupulous disposal of hot smoldering ash was recorded.
Within a month, dozens of cases occurred in Udmurtia, Khakassia, Buryatia, the Trans-Baikal Territory, Altai Territory, the Far East, the Jewish Autonomous Region, the document says.
