In December, according to the results of 2022, Russian banks made a profit of 203 billion rubles. This was reported in the materials of the Central Bank, published on January 27 on the website of the regulator.
“According to the results of 2022, the banking sector managed to compensate for the loss of 1.5 trillion rubles received in the first half of the year <...> and make a small profit of 203 billion rubles (return on capital – 1.8%),” the report says.
At the same time, not all banks were able to fully compensate for the losses at the beginning of the year, some market participants have significant losses, the regulator noted.
At the end of 2022, the share of profitable banks was 77% (more than 270 financial and credit institutions).
In 2021, the profit of the banking sector was a record – 2.4 trillion rubles.
In early January, experts predicted that there would be no crisis in the Russian banking sector in 2023, but such a scenario is quite real in Europe.
At the end of December 2022, the head of the Eastern European Institute of the Stockholm School of Economics, Thorbjorn Becker, indicated that the actions of the Central Bank and energy resources helped Russia resist the sanctions of the West.
