Registrations of passenger cars and SUVs in Europe as a whole reached a total of 6.58 million units in the first six months of the year, representing a 17.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Only in June 1.26 million units were sold, 18.2% more than in the same month of 2022, according to data published this Wednesday by the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA). If we only look at the data for June, the big surprise comes hand in hand with sustainability: the market share of pure electric cars increased from 10.7% to 15.1%, surpassing the share of diesel for the first time, located at 13.4%.
Even so, in the first half of the year, new gasoline cars achieved a market share of 37.2% in Europe, while sales of electric hybrids represented 24.9% of total operations. They are followed by diesel, with 14.5%; battery electric, with 12.9%; and plug-in hybrids, with 7.4%. The remaining 3.1% corresponded to “other fuels”. In the accumulated of the period, the electric car continues to occupy the fourth position and does not surpass the diesel.
In Spain, the market grew by 24% during the first half of the year, to 505,421 registrations. It is the country with the highest growth percentage, followed by Italy, with 22.8%, France (15.3%) and Germany (12.8%). The tendency to acquire more sustainable utilities is also increasing: registrations of electric hybrids rose 22.7% in June, and those of plug-in hybrids did so by 51.7%. Regarding combustion vehicles, in the sixth month 11.9% more gasoline cars were sold and almost one percentage point above the European average, which stands at 11%. In fact, Spain is the second market in all of Europe that has purchased the most gasoline vehicles, only behind Germany, which had an increase of 19.8%.
Diesel, on the other hand, is losing favor in the face of electric mobility. The EU market for diesel cars fell by 9.4% despite the fact that Germany and the Central European markets – in particular Romania, with an increase of 22.4% – continue to buy this type of utility. Thus, in absolute terms, diesel cars now represent a market share of 13.4%, compared to 17.4% in June last year.
According to ACEA, the European industry is recovering from the supply crisis and the shortage of chips. However, the industry is not able to improve the figures prior to the pandemic: in 2019 the accumulated volumes were 21% above the current figures. In the case of Spain, the manufacturer association Anfanc released similar figures at the beginning of the year and estimated that 21% fewer cars had left the national factories than in the same month of 2019.
Volkswagen, the best-selling brand
By brand, the market was led in June by the German Volkswagen, which registered 137,923 passenger cars in Europe, 21.7% more in year-on-year terms. In second place is Renault, which with 76,865 units sold, increased its turnover by 11.4%. In third place is Toyota, with 75,131 units delivered (+6%).
On the other hand, in the first half of the year, the market leader in Europe is also Volkswagen (700,621 units; +23.2%), followed by Toyota (422,110 units; +10.8%) and Audi (376,294 units). ; +26.1%), which closed the podium above Peugeot (358,009 units; +7.4%).
