Makar Sankranti Punyakalam is on January 15 from 7:15 AM to 12:30 PM. Total Duration – 5 Hours 14 Minutes. And Makara Sankranti ‘Maha Punyakalam’ starts at 7:15 am and lasts till 9:15 am. Duration – 2 hours. It is during this time that one should complete holy baths, do Sankranti Puja and pour milk. Ancestors believe that donations made during this time are of great benefit. Why Donate?
Sankranti is the festival of Lord Sun. According to Puranas.. It is very auspicious to offer Arghya to Lord Surya on Makar Sankranti. On this day water is taken in a copper vessel, black sesame seeds, jaggery, red sandalwood, red flowers, akshatas etc. are placed in it and the mantra ‘Om Suryanarayana Nama:’ is offered to the Sun. It is believed that offering argyam to Lord Shani on this day along with Lord Surya and giving alms to the poor will also remove planetary evils.
On the day of Sankranti, big Rangavallas are put up in front of the house. Gobbemmas are put in it. After that milk is poured in between them. New grains are planted around. Some people add rice and jaggery to the same milk and cook paramanam. It is offered to the sun god and distributed to everyone. It is believed that overflowing milk in front of the house on Sankranti brings happiness and prosperity like milk.
The day preceding the Makara Sankranti festival is known as Bhogi. Bonfires are lit on the morning of Bhogi day. Old things are thrown into that fire. Newness is invited. This time we are celebrating Bhogi on 14th January.
Kanuma festival is celebrated on the next day of Makar Sankranti. On this day, cattle are bathed, bathed and garlanded. All people want to flourish with sukha: happiness with dairy crops. This time we are celebrating Kanuma on 16th January.
