Saudi Arabia bans the planting of palm trees in public places

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has banned the planting of palm trees in public places. This is due to the discovery of flea-shaped pests found on palm trees that destroy the palms. The move is based on a recommendation made by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture last year.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs has issued a circular banning the planting of date palms in public gardens, roadsides and parks. This applies to all areas of the country. Faisal al-Faridi, head of the ministry’s tree planting department, said that palm trees should not be planted there as part of beautification while implementing new projects. Other trees should be planted instead. He said in the circular that care should be taken to plant trees that are adapted to the Saudi climate and do not drink much water.

According to the National Center for Palms and Dates, there are an estimated 31 million palm trees in Saudi Arabia. Last year, Saudi Arabia accounted for 17 percent of the world’s total date production. Planting in public places is prohibited if the larvae of a particular type of pest found on palm trees are destroying their trunk. Although palm orchards can protect palms with pesticides, the ban is based on the assessment that it is impossible to maintain them in isolated areas.

In Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, the law protecting personal information will come into force in six months. Saudi personal information is collected as part of various services.
