The powerful earthquake that occurred in Turkey did not affect the situation in Sochi in any way – at present the situation there is normal. As Elena Karpovich, head of the Sochi seismological station, said on February 6, specialists record information on instruments.
“The Turkish earthquake occurred in the southwest in the mountains, closer to the Mediterranean, and not to the Black Sea coast, so everything is calm with us. Aftershocks are constantly taking place, we take information from the instruments, otherwise everything is in normal mode, ”RIA Novosti quotes Karpovich.
The specialist added that at the moment no tremors have been recorded in the city. Although small similar natural phenomena for Sochi against the backdrop of the young and growing mountains of the Caucasus are absolutely normal for a resort.
Earlier it was reported that on February 6, tremors were felt by residents of Abkhazia. According to eyewitnesses, in multi-storey buildings one could see chandeliers swinging, someone’s door opened. Residents of Batumi in Georgia told the same story.
On the night of February 6, seismologists recorded an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, located near the Syrian border. In total, more than 30 aftershocks were recorded.
Later that day, it became known that another earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred in the eastern regions of Turkey, tremors from which were felt in Ankara. Its epicenter was the Elbistan district of Kahramanmarash province.
Turkey has declared the highest level of threat. Emergency services have been put on high alert. At the moment, more than 900 people have died, more than 5.3 thousand have been injured.
The consequences of the earthquakes also affected the Syrian provinces. Rescue work is currently underway. According to the latest data, 371 people died, another 1089 were injured.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Turkish and Syrian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad in connection with the numerous casualties and destruction. As the Turkish leader himself pointed out, this earthquake is the largest natural disaster in Turkey since 1939.
