OnThe girls who went to bathe in the water got stuck in a quicksand and died. The girls who went to rescue them also died. The tragedy took place in the state of Cuddalore. A check dam was built near the Gedilam river. Four girls climbed to bathe in an area 300 meters below the check dam. While bathing there .. the two girls went to a deeper area and got stuck in the mud. The rest of the girls came forward to save them as they were drowning in the quicksand and screaming. They were also trapped in the quicksand. Hearing the screams of the victims, three other girls rushed there. They were also trapped in the quicksand trying to save them. A total of seven girls were trapped in the quicksand and died. They are all between 10 and 18 years old. Locals nearby rescued a girl and took her to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Authorities found that the quicksand was 15 meters deep. He said the water in the reservoir was muddy due to low water. All the dead were identified as belonging to Kurunjipadi and Kuchipaleyam village in Banruti zone of Cuddalore district. The deceased have been identified as Priyadarshini (15), her sister Divyadarshini (10), Monisha (16), Navneeta (18), K. Priya (18), Sanghvi (16) and Kumuda (18). A girl named Priya got married to Prema a month ago. The incident took place at around 1pm on Sunday (June 5). Officers who received the information reached there and took each one out. The bodies were shifted to Cuddalore Government Hospital. Tragedy struck at the hospital with the cries of family members. Minister Emarke Panneerselvam visited Cuddalore Hospital and visited the families of the victims.
