A Sevilla fan was identified and expelled from the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium on Saturday (21) for “racist and xenophobic behavior” against Brazilian striker Vinicius Junior, during a Spanish League match against Real Madrid that ended in a 1-1 draw. announced the Andalusian club.
Sevilla explained that it reported the fan to the authorities as soon as it became aware of the acts against the Brazilian player, and condemned “all racist and xenophobic behavior, even if it is isolated, as in this case.”
The Spanish club also said that it wishes to collaborate with the courts to “eradicate these attitudes, which do not represent the fans of a club like Sevilla”.
In images published by the Spanish press, it is possible to identify a man making monkey gestures towards the Real Madrid striker, who was already the victim of racist attacks in a series of Spanish Championship matches last season.
“Congratulations to Sevilla for this quick stance and this punishment in a new sad episode for Spanish football,” said the Brazilian striker in a post on social media. Vinicius Junior also celebrated that “the racist’s face was registered on several websites on the internet”.
“Unfortunately, I had access to a video of another racist act in Saturday’s match, this time carried out by a child. I’m sad that there is no one to educate her,” added the Brazilian national team player.
The Brazilian also joked that this is “isolated episode number 19” since his arrival in Madrid in 2018.
One of the main names in the fight against racism in Spanish football, Vinicius Junior called out the country’s authorities and asked for changes in legislation, so that fans are criminally liable for racist acts committed.
“It would be a great first step to prepare for the 2030 World Cup. I am available to help,” said the player, referring to the World Cup that will be hosted jointly by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
The Real Madrid and Brazilian national team striker gave a statement to the court on October 5th in an investigation into racist insults that the player received during a match against Valencia on May 21st.
