From January 1, 2024, single-use plastic items will be completely phased out in the emirate. The decision to levy a fixed amount on these in October is the first step towards a complete ban on this. According to the new decision, the sale, transfer, manufacture and import of single-use plastic bags and other items have been banned. They can be replaced by reusable bags and other materials made of materials of quality and standards approved by the Municipal Affairs Department.

Ahead of the banning of single-use plastic, representatives of the Executive Council have announced that various plans have been devised to educate people, including children, about the dangers of plastic to the environment and human health. The authorities have also prepared systems for manufacturing and distributing bags that can be used as an alternative to plastic.
