The director general of the municipality, Ahmed Al Manfuhi, had earlier announced that establishments such as stores, restaurants and coffee shops located in the residential areas of various governorates should close before 12 midnight. With the coming into force of the new law, the maximum working hours of the shops will be till 12 midnight. The decision applies to all small and large shops except authorized central markets and pharmacies. Meanwhile, the municipality authorities informed that the establishments that have obtained special permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs will be given permission to operate even after midnight.

With the objective of protecting the privacy and tranquility of the people in the residential areas, the rule that no shops should be allowed in the residential areas after 12 midnight has been introduced. Along with this, the new law is also based on the assessment that shops operating late at night will have a harmful effect on the behavior and activities of the youth in the area.
