Indian opener Shubman Gill’s talent is unquestionable, but his maiden T20I century has been compared to that of Virat Kohli, a run machine in all forms of cricket.
India’s opener Shubman Gill scored 126 runs off 63 balls with 12 fours and 6 sixes in the T20 cricket match held yesterday in Ahmedabad against New Zealand. It was Shubman Gill’s first century in T20 International cricket. Moreover, scoring a century in his 6th game has attracted everyone’s attention.
Shubman Gill not only scored a century but also set a record as the highest run scorer in an innings of T20 cricket by an Indian player. Virat Kohli’s previous highest was 122 against Afghanistan. Shubman Gill has also become the 5th player to score a century in all formats of international competitions such as Tests, ODIs and T20Is in a short span of time.
The 23-year-old Shubman Gill, though capable of playing all the shots, did not feature in last year’s T20 World Cup. And he is yet to secure his place in the Indian team in all forms of cricket.
Shubman Gill Chatham Vlasi played an important role in India’s victory in the Test match against Bangladesh last December. He then threatened to hit a double century in the ODI cricket match held in January. This game earned him the nickname ‘Smoothman Kill’. This is due to Shubman Gill hitting shots freely like Sunil Gavaskar.
India T20 captain Hardik Pandya said, “Shubman Gill will definitely reach great heights in his career not only because of his performance in the match in Ahmedabad, but because of his work ethic and integrity towards the game.
I have already found that Shubman Gill has the style and technique to play all forms of cricket. So it doesn’t surprise me. The effortless batting that he can do, not many people can do. Playing all formats as a youngster adds a lot of meaning to him and a new dimension to the game.”
According to former Indian player Wasim Jafar, there is no denying that Shubman Gill won hearts by playing well in Test cricket. He also performs well in ODIs. But his performance in the 3rd T20I against New Zealand proves that India have found a great player. He is a player who can play all three forms of cricket. He is the next great batsman after Virat Kohli who is going to get better.”
Shubman Gill scored 360 runs in the 3 ODI series against New Zealand. It is noteworthy that through this, he equaled Pakistan’s Babar Azam’s record for scoring the most runs in a 3-match bilateral series. After Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill has emerged as the new run-scoring engine of the Indian team. This has increased the expectation on him in the upcoming Test series against Australia.
