Six Montreal Alouettes players were named to the Eastern All-Stars of the Canadian Football League on Thursday. Awards dominated by Toronto Argonauts players.
Pass receiver Austin Mack, offensive lineman Nick Callender, defensive lineman Mustafah Johnson, linebacker Tyrice Beverette, defensive back Wesley Sutton, as well as safety and Eastern Conference MVP Marc- Antoine Dequoy were honored by a national panel, head coaches, as well as journalists who are members of Football Columnists of Canada assigned to cover the CFL, including The Canadian Press.
This is a second selection for Sutton. All other Alouettes players received this honor for the first time in their career.
Dequoy ranks second in the Canadian League with five interceptions this season, including two returned for a touchdown. Author of 57 defensive tackles and five others on special teams, he also caused three fumbles, recovered two and knocked down six passes.
Mack has caught 78 passes for 1,154 yards, good for fifth in the CFL, and four touchdowns. His 413 yards after the catch place him fourth in the league.
Callender was a key part of the Alouettes’ ground game, allowing Caleb Evans to score eight rushing touchdowns, while Johnson was formidable on the defensive line with 43 tackles, seven sacks and a fumble recovery for a touch.
Beverette was among the best in the league with 89 tackles and 20 more on special teams. He also recovered four fumbles, two of which turned into touchdowns.
Sutton had 54 tackles on defense and one on special teams, three sacks and an interception returned for a major.
The Argonauts, the best team in the Ambrosie circuit this season with a 16-2 record, dominated these annual honors with 14 selections, including quarterback Chad Kelly, MVP in the East. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (14-4) dominated the nominations in the West, with 11 representatives.
