In June, over 3,000 migrants arrived in the UK across the English Channel by boat. This was announced by the Sky News channel on Friday, July 1.
As specified in the publication, this figure was the highest indicator of migrants who have arrived since the beginning of this year for a month. Comparing it with the same data from 2021, the authors of the article warn of a doubling of the migration flow, regardless of London’s reforms in this area. So, in 2021, over 28 thousand people crossed the strait, according to the channel.
“At least 12,700 people were able to reach the UK by boat in 2022,” the channel writes, citing its own calculations.
On average, 33 people can be on board the boat, the publication adds. It will be clarified that this is twice as much as last year.
In April, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the authorities intend to fight illegal migration. At the same time, it was noted that the head of government intends to destroy the business of smugglers. The reason for the migration crisis last year, British Home Secretary Priti Patel called the fact that the EU has no protection at the borders.
In November 2021, Belgium and France discussed with Frontex measures to control illegal migration across the English Channel. The reason was an incident when a boat with migrants sank en route to the UK, resulting in the death of 31 people. Because of what happened in relations between London and Paris, they saw an aggravation.
In 2020, more than 9.6 thousand attempts to illegally cross the border with the UK across the English Channel were recorded. At least six people were killed, and at least three who tried to cross the strait were missing. A total of 868 rescue operations were carried out. In 2019, the total number of detainees was almost 2.3 thousand.
