This Thursday the first Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment of the year will be made, with amounts of money that may reach up to $943 dollars for those who file their tax return individually.
This payment will be the first of the SSI disbursements that will be made in 2024.
To be eligible for SSI, you must have limited income and meet at least one of the following criteria: be 65 years or older, be totally or partially blind, or have a physical or mental condition that seriously limits daily activities for a period of time. 12 months or more.
The maximum amount that a person can receive varies depending on the category under which they file their return: individually or together with their partner.
Individuals classified as essential people will also receive the payment.
In 2024, those who file taxes individually will be able to receive up to $943 per month, couples who file jointly up to $1,415and essential people, those who live with and care for SSI beneficiaries, up to $472 per month.
Not all beneficiaries will receive the maximum amount of money.
The Social Security Administration offers an online calculator to get a personalized estimate of how much money you could receive.
These amounts have a 3.2% increase with respect to the year 2023.
The SSI program was established in 1974 with the goal of providing additional assistance to citizens in vulnerable situations, including the elderly, blind and disabled.
These payments are made in addition to regular Social Security benefits, providing monthly income to both adults and children with visual impairments, other disabilities, and limited incomes.
