It is well known that the northern lights are a very normal phenomenon on our planet, something that does not really affect those who appreciate it, it is even a fact that people can consider as majestic and even beautiful within the ecosystem. However, there is a point at which these things can turn into the dreaded solar storms, bringing misfortune with them, and some scientists mention that something known as an internet apocalypse could occur.
The teacher Peter Beckerof the University George Mason, warns that the growing activity of solar panels, which intersects with dependence on the internet throughout the globe, could have serious consequences almost immediately. This concern arises as the sun enters a more active phase, coinciding with the satellites that provide this type of service to people, having interference and of course, causing the network to begin to fail.
To be a little clearer on the matter, distortion with the sun’s energy can create currents that could reverse the normal flow of electricity, potentially damaging the electrical grid, satellites, underground fiber cables, navigation systems and communication equipment. It is not the first time that such a case has occurred, given that in 1859 the telegraph system was interrupted, causing sparks and high tension in the cables, removing this communication service for days.
It has not been taken for granted, but given that the sun has been more present in recent months, it is possible that this so-called internet apocalypse will occur at some point in 2024, unless there are certain obstructions that are in place to avoid such activity. One of them is precisely to strengthen the cable and satellite infrastructure in some way so that they are not affected, but that should be well in advance, that is, start before the end of the year.
