A South African rapist and murderer who escaped prison last year by faking his own death has been arrested in Tanzania. According to the police, the man, his girlfriend and a third suspect were about to flee to Kenya. They will be extradited to South Africa, the BBC reports.
Thabo Bester is known domestically as the Facebook rapist because he met his victims through that social medium. In 2012, he was convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend at the time.
In May, reports emerged that Bester had been found dead in his cell, after he allegedly set himself on fire. But at the end of last year, that story was called into question by local media. The police recently launched a new investigation when tests showed that the body found in the cell was not Bester’s. In addition, the hitherto unknown person had died from a blow to the head.
Employees of the British security company G4S, which managed the prison in Bloemfontein, are accused of helping Bester. G4S has announced that it has suspended three employees because of the incident.
