(CNN) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol sang “American Pie” in the White House State Dining Room after having a state dinner with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday, footage from the event shows.
After the performance, Biden addressed the audience and told an anecdote about his children, who sang “American Pie” when they drove to school. Biden then turned to Yoon and said, “We know it’s one of your favorite songs.”
Yoon replied in Korean, “Yes, that’s true. Back in my college days.” So Biden, looking at Yoon, said, “Well, we wanted to hear you sing it.” Laughter filled the room, and soon after, Yoon took the microphone.
“Since all of you here are strong supporters and shareholders of our South Korea-US alliance, I’ll sing just one verse,” Yoon said, and proceeded to sing a verse of “American Pie.”
After Yoon received a standing ovation, Biden presented him with a guitar signed by Don McClean. South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee finally joined Yoon on stage.
