Spain’s national football team players have strongly criticised the German fans who booed Marc Cucurella during Spain’s win over France early Wednesday in the semi-finals of the Euro 2024 tournament.
A penalty kick was not awarded after the ball touched the hand of the Chelsea left-back in the penalty area, in the match in which the Spanish national team won against its German counterpart 2-1 in the quarter-finals. The referees decided that he did not intentionally touch the ball with his hand, and according to the rules, a penalty kick could not be awarded.
Most Germans did not agree with this decision, and some German fans who were present in the Munich stadium, who came to watch the German team advance to the semi-finals, whistled when the 25-year-old Kokrella touched the ball.
“I think it’s disgraceful,” Spain defender Dani Vivian told reporters after reaching the final.
“No player deserves this, I think anyone who goes to a football stadium to boo someone has no respect for the person doing their job,” he added.
“It doesn’t matter to me, we have to stay focused, when people talk about this, it’s part of the game,” Cucurella told ZDF.
The Spanish fans responded to the whistles by chanting in support of Cucurella.
“I don’t know why they booed him, it motivated him more, he is a professional player and knows how to deal with pressure,” said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.
He added that those who blew the whistles did not represent the sport or Germany, which was an exceptional host of the tournament.
