In several Brabant areas, water is no longer allowed to be taken from the waterways and connected ditches and streams, for example for watering the fields. The reason: the ongoing spring drought.
As of today, a ban applies in five river basins: the Dongevallei, the Brandse Vaart and side streams, Kibbelvaart, Lokkervaart and Bosloop, De Wouwse grounds and Bleekloop en Zoom.
These are the first provincial abstraction bans for surface water in 2022. In recent years, these areas have also been the first to show signs of drought. The ban is for an indefinite period of time. No abstraction ban from surface water applies (yet) to other areas in West Brabant.
In February it rained a lot throughout the Netherlands for a long time, but March and April were exceptionally dry and sunny. As a result, a lot of moisture has also evaporated, according to experts.
Farmers are greatly inconvenienced by bans on spraying during this season. They sow their fields and grassland also needs water to grow. Water boards and farmers’ organizations are working hard on measures to be able to retain water for longer now that it is increasingly dry.
