The political situation in Sri Lanka, which is reeling from the crisis, is changing rapidly. Ranil Wickremesinghe became the new Prime Minister of the country. He is 73 years old. Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in the presence of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace on Thursday (May 12) evening. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s assumption of office as Prime Minister is not new to Sri Lanka. He has previously served as Prime Minister four times. Citizens of the country are posting on social media saying ‘Vikramasinghe is back’.
It is learned that Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned as the Prime Minister due to the flames of protest. President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who is trying to shore up the country from the crisis, has opted to appoint United National Party leader Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister. Addressing the Lankan Parliament on Wednesday, he said he would bring in a new Prime Minister who would win the confidence of the people.
Having served as a minister in various governments and four terms as Prime Minister, Wickremesinghe is known as a visionary leader who can effectively manage the economy. Analysts say the crisis in Sri Lanka needs leaders like veteran Wickremesinghe to end it as soon as possible.
