During 2023, more than 14,000 games were released on Steam, according to SteamDB data.
To be exact, 14,535 titles were published in the Valve store last year, approximately 2,000 more than in 2022.
As can be seen on SteamDB, the number of releases on Steam ranged between 100 and 400 games per year until 2013.
In 2014, the effect of the introduction of Steam Greenlight in 2012 began to be felt. Greenlight was the first system that allowed games to be published on Steam without going through a Valve filter. The peculiarity of Grenlight is that the games had to receive a certain number of votes from the community to be released on Steam. As a curiosity, the first title to be launched under this program was McPixel.
The next peak of releases comes in 2018, a few months after the entry of Greenlight’s successor: Steam Direct. This system, still present, facilitates the self-publishing of titles in the Valve store by charging a fee of $100 per release that can be recovered based on a certain sales volume.
Between 2017 and 2024, the number of annual releases on Steam has doubled (from 6,949 to 14,535).
According to Matt Piscatella of the Circana group, the video game platform that has come closest to this figure in the United States has been Nintendo Switch during 2023 with 2,360 launches.
