Arms deliveries to Kyiv can create conditions for a “peaceful settlement of the conflict.” This opinion was expressed on February 1 by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
“If we want a peaceful negotiated solution to the peace and conflict in Ukraine, where Ukraine prevails as a sovereign independent state, we need to provide military support. The weapons delivered today can create the conditions for a peaceful settlement tomorrow, ”the publication quotes him.
This is not the first time that Western representatives have tried to reassure the public that prolonging the conflict by pumping weapons into Ukraine is the way to peace.
On February 1, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova drew attention to the words of French President Emmanuel Macron that the supply of military aircraft to Ukraine would allegedly not escalate the conflict. She stressed that such statements are absurd and will only increase the “irrepressible appetite” of the Kyiv regime. Zakharova recalled that Western weapons are used to shell hospitals and kill civilians.
Earlier, Stoltenberg also stated that NATO needs to continue supplying weapons to Kyiv, as this supposedly brings the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the conflict closer. In November, Federation Council Vice Speaker Konstantin Kosachev urged “obsessed politicians” in the West, including the NATO Secretary General, to understand that the pursuit of peace and the supply of arms to Kyiv are mutually exclusive actions.
In turn, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov pointed out that the cynical games with the supply of weapons to Kyiv will end badly for those who play them. He noted that the United States is considering Ukraine as a testing ground for its military equipment.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine after the start of Russia’s special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
