The festival of Ram Navami was celebrated with pomp across the country on Thursday. There were also reports of violence and arson in some states. Incidents of stone pelting and arson followed clashes between two communities in Gujarat’s Vadodara, Maharashtra’s Kshatrapati Sambhajinagar-Jalgaon, West Bengal’s Howrah-Islampur and Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. So far more than 50 people have been arrested.
Police and anti-riot forces are also continuously patrolling these areas. Now the condition is normal. Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee said, ‘I had already warned not to take processions from Muslim areas, but BJP people deliberately target these areas. They themselves want to create riots.

1. Gujarat: Stone pelting in procession, 22 arrested so far
Stones were pelted at two places in Gujarat’s Vadodara city during the Ram Navami procession. The first incident took place in the afternoon near Panjrigar Mohalla of Fatehpura area, while the second incident took place in the evening at nearby Kumbharwada. According to the police, no one was injured in the incident in Fatehpura area, while some people, including a woman, were injured in stone pelting at a Ram Navami procession in Kumbharwada. The Panjrigar Mohalla procession was organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Whereas, the second procession was organized by the local residents.

Local BJP MLA Manisha Vakil was part of the procession which was pelted with stones in Kumbharwada. The MLA said, “When the procession was passing peacefully, some people suddenly started throwing stones at us. Some women were injured. Some of the injured reported that stones were thrown from nearby rooftops. Police say that the incident took place when the procession reached near a mosque and people started reaching the spot. This is not a communal riot. We dispersed the crowd and the procession moved on.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Shanghvi told news agency ANI, ‘Stones were pelted in Fatehpura and Kumbharwada areas during the Ram Navami procession in Vadodara. 22 people have been arrested. The accused are being identified with the help of CCTV footage. Additional force has been sent to Vadodara. Strict action will be taken against stone pelters.
2. Maharashtra: 12 people including 10 policemen injured in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar; 20 arrested
A clash broke out between two groups on Wednesday night in Kiradpura area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (old name Aurangabad) in Maharashtra. People pelted stones at each other and set several vehicles on fire. People also pelted stones at the police who reached the spot. Twelve people, including 10 policemen, were injured in the attack. So far 20 people have been arrested. The violence started at 11.30 pm and continued till 3.30 am.

When the police arrived to control the situation, the mob pelted stones. Police vehicles were set on fire.
Sambhajinagar MP Imtiyaz Jaleel said that there was a clash between two groups of alcoholics. It was they who pelted stones. There was no damage to the Ram temple. No one went to the temple. So citizens should not believe in rumours. Some religious leaders were called to control the crowd in Sambhajinagar. But the crowd was not ready to listen to him.

Within no time, a heavy force including senior police officers reached the spot. The rioters also pelted stones at him and broke the glasses of the car. The police dispersed the crowd by lathi charge. Released tear gas shells too. The rioters also threw water on the fire brigade vehicles. According to the locals, the police fired two-three times in the air after seeing the crowd getting out of control.
3. West Bengal: Stone pelting and arson in the procession of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Banjar Dal in Howrah
Violent clashes broke out during the procession in Howrah and North Dinajpur districts of West Bengal. There was also violence in Shibpur in Howrah and Dalkhola in Islampur town in North Dinajpur district. In Howrah’s Shibpur, there was fierce stone pelting between two groups. Videos are also going viral, in which some people are seen throwing stones at the procession from the rooftops of the houses. After this, the crowd involved in the procession also threw stones. The mob torched nearby vehicles and shops. Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Banjarg Dal took out a procession in Shibpur.

In Howrah, the police brought the situation under control and conducted a flag march in the area.
The second case of violence is from Dalkhola in Islampur city. Here too, during the procession, there was fierce stone-pelting between two groups. A young man died in this, while five-six policemen were injured. Police said that the youth died of a heart attack during the violence. Police removed people from there with the help of tear gas. Some people have also been arrested there.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directly blamed the BJP for these incidents. Without naming the BJP, Mamta said, “They have been calling goons from outside the state for communal riots.” No one stopped their processions but they do not have the right to march with swords and bulldozers.
How dare they do this in Howrah?’ Mamta said- ‘Why did he change the route? Why choose an unauthorized route to target and attack one community in particular? BJP has always targeted Howrah, Park Circus and Islampur.

Mamta Banerjee was protesting against the central government in Kolkata for the last two days. Yesterday, their protest ended amid violence in Howrah.
West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said, ‘TMC is lying, because it was not the wrong way. Access was allowed till Howrah Maidan and this was the only way to go there. Now days have come in India that you can take out Ram Navami procession in some areas and not in other areas.
BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari said violence had taken place at the same place in Howrah last year. I am not blaming any one community for this. This is a failure of the administration. Union Minister Giriraj Singh said that Mamta Banerjee spread the red carpet for Rohingyas, the country will never forgive them.
4. Uttar Pradesh: Two groups gathered at Bhimrao Ambedkar University to protest against the procession
The news of violence on Ram Navami also came from Lucknow. There, a clash broke out between a group of students at Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU). Here ABVP students had taken out a procession on Ram Navami. The other group opposed this, on which a clash took place. Later both the groups demanded action from the VC. However, this matter has not reached the police.
